At Nu Perspectives we have in house shrink fitting capabilities, we can shrink fit small to large scale batch sizes. Shrink fitting is a great alternative to forced fitting using thermal expansion and contraction effects to minimise the force requirements
Shrink fitting is a good way to assemble parts that require an interference fit as conventional press fitting may damage the part due to the applied force, particularly if the part is delicate.
Liquid nitrogen is used to cool the part that will be inserted into the mating part, once the part is fully cooled it can then be removed from the liquid nitrogen.
Cooling reduces the size of the part by thermal contraction, providing the fits have been calculated correctly the part will then be in clearance and can be easily fitted into the mating part without applying any force.
When the assembled parts warm up thermal expansion occurs, creating the desired interference fit at ambient temperature.
Some examples of shrink fitting applications include shafts, bearings and axles.
